Iran Accused of Charging Toll Tax in Strait of Hormuz

A major geopolitical concern has emerged as Iran is reportedly charging a toll tax for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world most critical oil transit routes.

 What Are the Allegations?

According to reports, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is increasing its control over the waterway and allegedly:

  • Deciding which vessels are allowed to pass
  • Restricting or blocking certain ships
  • Charging fees similar to a toll tax

An Israeli intelligence official told Fox News that the Strait is now effectively under IRGC control.

 Why This Matters

The Strait of Hormuz handles nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply. Any disruption could:

  • Spike global oil prices
  • Impact economies worldwide, especially oil-importing countries like India
  • Disrupt global trade and supply chains

US Response

Former US President Donald Trump had earlier warned that such actions by Iran would not be allowed and could trigger a response.

The United States continues to maintain a strong naval presence in the region to ensure freedom of navigation.

Ground Reality

  • There is no official confirmation yet that Iran has formally imposed a toll system
  • The claims could be:
    • A strategic pressure tactic
    • Part of ongoing geopolitical tensions or information warfare

 Conclusion

If Iran truly begins controlling the Strait like a “toll booth,” it could lead to a major global economic and energy crisis. For now, the situation remains tense and under close international watch.
